I had the pleasure of attending an Integrative Mental Health conference  this last week. I didn’t have much expectations when I signed up for it as the topics seemed not that different.  But I was surprised  at what I learned.

There was one effective  therapy for mental illness which made sense to me retrospectively  but it blew my mind in a good way.

effective therapy for mental illness

One of the Advanced Mental Health Therapies

There was this study that was done in Stanford in 2024.  21 patients with serious mental illness were enrolled in the study.  96% of them achieved ketosis.  That is they ate mostly a fat based diet, 60-70% fats, 20-30% protein, and 5-15% carbohydrate. And guess what were the results?

100% who were on the ketogenic diet had remission in their mental health symptoms. That’s right – 100%!  They had improvements in quality of life and sleep and improved across all mental health measures.

Another study was done with 31 inpatients (patients who were hospitalized for their mental illness). 100% improved in their mental health symptoms and 43% achieved clinical remission.

Meaning that 43% got better and that is in people who were  hospitalized! Those are remarkable numbers!!

People who are pregnant, anorexic or having an acute psychiatric illness should not do this but if the people who would be candidates for this would be those who had:

  •  Inadequate relief from previous treatments
  • Complaints of low energy, brain fog, and/or decreased motivation
  • Have other metabolic conditions such as diabetes mellitus, etc.
  • Side effects from psychiatric meds and want to decrease the side effects
  • Multiple psychiatric conditions
  • Preference for holistic approaches

But if you or someone you know has serious mental illness and things aren’t working well then it might be worth it to think of the ketogenic diet.  It is one of the advanced mental health therapies.

I would recommend seeing a nutritionist or doctor who knows about the ketogenic diet to help guide a person through this.
